Business Process in a Process Wilderness

How do (some) large, global companies survive and thrive without investing in business processes? More importantly, why do they operate that way?

Stan will share his personal experiences gleaned for 20+ years working at Microsoft as a case-study and offer some suggestions how to manage-through such cultural challenges.

Stan will describe one or two specific process projects/initiatives that he was involved with at Microsoft, one a global business transformation project, the other a ‘breakthrough’ operational excellence program.

  • He will describe the business context, purpose, and outcomes of these efforts, with a focus on the management- and organizational- cultural challenges that slowed or limited progress.
  • He will describe the strategies and tactics he employed to try to overcome the cultural hurdles, and will share which worked, which did not, and what he would do differently if he had to do it all over again.

Stan Julien, VP and co-founder of Triaster USA

Stan has spent his entire career in sales, marketing, and their related IT and operations. He was a successful enterprise account manager selling into large UK public-sector accounts at IBM and was there to witness IBM’s first ‘quality push’ for ISO certification and a Baldrige award.

He briefly held a similar government enterprise selling role for Microsoft UK, before moving to the Microsoft corporate headquarters in Redmond Washington. During his 20-year career with Microsoft Stan held various roles in marketing, sales operations, partner sales operations and even (briefly!) IT. His work spanned a range of sales and marketing process designs, automation, and system implementations: incentive compensation; Siebel and other CRM global readiness and deployment; relationship marketing programs; online RM websites; customer self-service license management; quota distribution; partner target setting; and innovative sales data quality optimization.

In these later sales ops roles Stan came to understand and evangelize the vital importance of business process management. He commissioned Microsoft's first global process libraries for corporate account sales, a BPM platform that subsequently replicated in seven other business units in Microsoft. Stan’s use of Triaster products for his Microsoft BPM started a 10-year relationship with Triaster UK products and company, and in 2015 Stan left Microsoft to co-found Triaster USA, providing BPM services and solutions across the US.
