SR-71 Beginning Days ( Beale AFB, CA and Okinawa )


1965 Crew Cadre arrival at Beale AFB, CA, CIA Clearances, Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich our initial 1965 Blackbird Instructors in the Skunk Works, Witnessing Amazement, Nortronics Skunk Works and our pre-GPS Astro-Inertial Nav System (ANS), Pressure Chamber Flights at 90,000 feet Got Our Attention, LINK’s Grocery Store SR-71 Simulator, Creating our own “Academic, Simulator, Flight Training Program”, First Mach 3 + Flights, UNSTARTS, more Witnessing Amazement, Humor and High Jinks along the way, 5.2 Hour Flights to Okinawa, Penetrating and Recon of the “Bad Guys”, Mother Natures Lessons Learned, Good Luck, and Becoming Humble during the “Times Of Our Lives”.

DAVID P. DEMPSTER

COLONEL, USAF, RETIRED


DAVID ( AT AGE 19 ), ENLISTED IN THE USAF IN AUGUST, 1953, ENTERED THE AVIATION CADET PROGRAM AND WAS COMMISSIONED AS A 2LT AND RATED NAVIGATOR IN 1955.

HE COMPLETED BOMBARDIER TRAINING IN 1957.

DURING HIS 27-YEAR USAF CAREER, HE FLEW AS A SAC COMBAT CREW MEMBER FOR 14 YEARS IN RB-36F, B-47E, B-58A ( MACH 2, “HUSTLER” ) AND SR-71A ( MACH 3+, “BLACKBIRD” ) AIRCRAFT. IN 1971 HE ALSO FLEW 159 AC-130A GUNSHIP COMBAT SORTIES FROM THAILAND INTO SOUTH VIETNAM, LAOS AND CAMBODIA.

IN 1965, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SR-71 PROGRAM, DAVID WAS ONE OF THE EIGHT B-58 CREWMEMBERS (4 PILOTS AND 4 NAVIGATOR / BOMBARDIERS) SELECTED AS THE PROGRAM COMBAT CREW AND INSTRUCTOR CADRE. WITH THIS INITIAL GROUP, HE COMPLETED LOCKHEED SKUNK WORKS TRAINING IN JUNE, 1965 AND THEN PARTICIPATED IN THE SET-UP AND OPERATION OF THE SAC COMBAT CREW TRAINING PROGRAM AT BEALE AFB, CA. HE, AND HIS SR-71 PILOT JIM WATKINS, WERE ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST FOUR CREWS TO DEPLOY THE SR-71 OVERSEAS IN 1968 TO OKINAWA AND FLY OPERATIONAL SR-71 RECONNAISSANCE AND COMBAT SORTIES INTO “DENIED” AIRSPACE.

IN 1969, DAVID MOVED ON TO RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ASSIGNMENTS AT WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, OHIO INCLUDING 5 YEARS IN THE B-1 BOMBER AVIONICS ENGINEERING OFFICE, 3 YEARS AS DIRECTOR FOR THE AVIONICS & AIRCRAFT ACCESSORIES SYSTEM PROGRAM OFFICE (SPO), AND 2 YEARS AS DIRECTOR FOR THE ELECTRONIC WARFARE SPO.

IN 1978, DAVID BETRAYED HIS FELLOW NAVIGATORS AND COMPLETED THE DAYTON, OHIO CESSNA DEALERSHIP PILOT TRAINING PROGRAM, LEARNED HOW TO SHOUT “CLEAR”, AND BECAME RESPECTFUL OF THE CESSNA 150 AND IT'S CLOUD DODGING SPEED OF 150 KNOTS.

DURING HIS AIR FORCE YEARS, DAVID COMPLETED ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE BUSINESS BA AND AUBURN COLLEGE MBA DEGREES PLUS USC MASTERS LEVEL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT TRAINING.

A DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE OF THE AIR WAR COLLEGE IN 1976, HIS 31 AWARDS AND DECORATIONS INCLUDE THE LEGION OF MERIT, 4 DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSSES, 2 MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDALS AND 11 AIR MEDALS.

DAVID RETIRED FROM THE USAF IN 1980, JOINED THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRYAND RETIRED FROM THE BOEING COMPANY IN 1993. DURING HIS BOEING YEARS, DAVID WAS PART OF PROGRAM MANAGEMENT TEAMS ON ENERGY MANAGEMENT, THE B-2 STEALTH BOMBER, THE CONDOR UNMANNED AIR VEHICLE ( UAV ) AND OTHER CLASSIFIED UAV PROGRAMS.

DAVID AND TERRY ( HIS WIFE, BUT DECEASED IN 2012 ) WERE MARRIED FOR 54 YEARS, RAISED 3 DAUGHTERS AND ENJOYED THEIR 3 GRANDCHILDREN. HIS CURRENT HOME, WHICH IS WHERE HE AND TERRY SETTLED IN 1982, IS IN BEAUX ARTS VILLAGE ON THE EAST SIDE OF LAKE WASHINGTON. HE HAS BEEN AN ACTIVE BOATER FOR 33 YEARS, INCLUDING SINCE 1995, FIVE TRIPS UP THE INSIDE PASSAGE TO SE ALASKA IN HIS 38 FT. BAYLINER "NORTH*STAR"..
